Purpose-Built Dog Care Facility Now Available in Bridgend

A significant opportunity has arisen for an established operator or ambitious entrepreneur within the UK pet care sector, with a purpose-built dog care facility becoming available in Brynmenyn, Bridgend, South Wales.

The facility, previously operated by a PIF member, is designed specifically for high-volume, welfare-aligned dog services and is ready for immediate operation, offering an ideal platform for market entry or expansion in the region.

Located on Picton Yard, St Theodores Way, the premises were thoughtfully constructed with the comfort and safety of dogs as a primary consideration, alongside the need for practical and efficient workspace for staff.

The building is substantial, spanning approximately 61 metres (200 feet) in length and 15 metres (50 feet) in width. This generous footprint provides a flexible layout that can easily support multiple commercial services simultaneously, including:

  • Dog Day Care

  • Grooming

  • Training

  • Boarding

The interior is brightly lit and features a logical flow, transitioning naturally from reception and grooming areas into distinct indoor play zones and rest suites.

A key feature that makes this facility particularly attractive to professional operators is the extensive secure space available. Internally, the distinct zones allow multiple activities to run smoothly under one roof.

Externally, the site boasts large enclosed indoor and outdoor areas, providing ample, safe space for dogs to exercise and explore regardless of weather conditions. The current setup also includes access to four separate, fully-enclosed fields, which significantly enhances the service proposition for group activities and individual care.

The site benefits from excellent road access and dedicated parking for clients, and it holds a recognised local reputation as a trusted location for pet services, providing a strong foundation for a new operator to build upon.

This facility represents a investment for businesses looking to expand their geographical reach into South Wales or for those seeking to acquire a ready-made, high-specification operational base.

Key Operational Features:

  • Purpose-built design tailored specifically for dog care services.

  • Large enclosed indoor and outdoor areas for safe play and exercise.

  • Spacious internal layout supporting multiple services (grooming, play, rest).

  • Ready for immediate occupation and use.

The Dog Trainer School Launches New Product Mark to Recognise Professionally Tested Pet Products

The Dog Trainer School (TDTS) has introduced ‘The Dog Trainer School Recommended Product,’ a new, independent recognition mark designed to help pet owners identify products that have been tested to professional standards in practical, real-world, and training settings.

The programme offers a valuable opportunity for Pet Industry Federation (PIF) member brands to showcase that their commitment to quality and innovation has been rigorously vetted by working professionals within the industry.

The TDTS Recommended status is awarded following a transparent, criteria-based evaluation led by TDTS Director Helen Wainwright, a former product tester for the Good Housekeeping Institute. This methodology brings evidence-led assurance to the pet sector.

  • Evaluations are carried out by a network of over 300 working dog trainers and pet professionals across the UK. Products are assessed against industry-relevant criteria, including:
  • Practical usability and ease of cleaning.
  • Alignment with dog welfare standards.
  • Clarity of instructions.
  • Durability and value for money.
  • A crucial “would you recommend to clients?” threshold.

In the inaugural round of testing, several products already available in retail stores, including those from PIF member brands, successfully achieved the TDTS Recommended status. This achievement demonstrates the high-quality standards maintained by members of the Federation.

Among the first products to be recognised are:

Tug-E-Nuff – Fauxtastic Powerball Bungee: Praised for its high-engagement design, cushioned bungee, durable faux-fur, and secure handler grip—offering practical benefits that dogs and their owners appreciate.

No Fuss Fill – SkooGo® Gloves: Recognised for reliable wet-weather grip for leads/long lines, combined with fingerless dexterity and a practical pocket.

My Anxious Dog – Squeezy Reward & Affiliate Pack: Noted for clean, one-hand reinforcement and consistent owner communications using the #DogsInYellow initiative.

DotDotPet – Eco Biodegradable Towels & Conditioning Dog Shampoo: Both products were highlighted for making pet care more convenient, with the towels offering strong absorbency in a van-friendly format, and the shampoo featuring easy one-hand dispensing and quick lather/rinse.

“Our aim is to give dog owners independent, practitioner-led assurance,” said Helen Wainwright, Co-Founder of TDTS. “When a product is Dog Trainer School Recommended, it means multiple working trainers have used it under typical conditions—rain, mud and busy classes and would genuinely recommend it to owners.”

Lee Hobbs, Co-Founder of TDTS and Dog Trainer, added: “The Dog Trainer School Recommended logo helps brands stand out in a crowded market. By intentionally starting with smaller, independent brands, we can give them a lift, spotlighting welfare-aligned products that genuinely work in real-world training.”

PIF member brands are encouraged to submit their products for the upcoming testing window to benefit from this independent validation. Successful products may display the badge for 12 months, after which a reassessment is conducted to ensure continued quality.

Pet Industry Shows its Heart: £15,000 Raised at PIF Awards to Support Pets in Ukraine

Last week’s Pet Industry Federation (PIF) Awards 2025 not only celebrated excellence within the UK pet sector but also demonstrated the industry’s extraordinary compassion. During the black-tie event, attended by over 300 guests, attendees pledged more than £15,000 to fund transport carrying donated pet supplies to Ukraine.

The funds will help cover the cost of lorries needed to deliver thousands of pounds’ worth of food, medicines, and essential pet products donated by UK pet companies, which have been awaiting transportation to war-torn Ukraine. Each truck costs around £3,500 to send, meaning the pledges raised will fund several shipments through the Save Pets of Ukraine GoFundMe campaign.

In recognition of their generosity, The Big Biscuit Co and The Doggy Daycare Centre, whose tables pledged the highest amounts, each received a bottle of champagne for their table on the night.

Nigel Baker, PIF CEO, said: “We were absolutely delighted and incredibly proud of the generosity shown by everyone at the PIF Awards. The pet industry has once again demonstrated the kindness and solidarity that define it. This money will make a real difference to animals in desperate need, helping to get vital food, medicine, and supplies to pets left behind in Ukraine.”

The donations will be sent directly via the Save Pets of Ukraine GoFundMe page, ensuring that funds are used immediately to support transport and aid distribution.

The PIF Awards, held annually, recognise outstanding achievements across the UK pet sector, from retailers and groomers to manufacturers and service providers, with finalists representing the very best in innovation, welfare, and community spirit.

Details about the Awards, including photos from the night, can be found here

Inventor Smart Care Wins Fressnapf Innovation Award and Expands Across Europe

PIF member Inventor Smart Care, the UK start-up behind the world’s first cat-friendly toothbrush, has been named one of Europe’s most innovative companies after winning the Fressnapf Innovation Award 2025.

The accolade secures shelf space for the company’s flagship product, the Dental Wand, in Fressnapf stores across Denmark, Switzerland and Austria, alongside a listing on the German Fressnapf Marketplace, Europe’s largest online pet retail network.

“This award is a huge honour and an exciting step in our mission to keep millions of cats healthy and happy,” said Victor Carpio, Founder and CEO of Inventor Smart Care. “It is our first time in Germany, and definitely not the last.”

Founded in 2023, Inventor Smart Care was established to address one of the most persistent issues in pet health: feline dental disease. Despite decades of guidance, around 85% of cats over the age of three show signs of oral health problems.

The company’s pioneering Dental Wand rethinks the traditional toothbrush by allowing cats to engage through instinct and play. Rather than restraint, the tool encourages natural cooperation between cat and owner, turning brushing into a positive, interactive experience.

The Dental Wand has an 89% success rate in trials and is already available in 16 countries, reflecting strong demand for products that support preventive care and strengthen the human-animal bond.

The Fressnapf Innovation Award is one of the pet industry’s most respected honours, recognising products that deliver measurable benefits to animal welfare and wellbeing.

For Inventor Smart Care, the award marks a major step forward in its growth journey, providing access to over 1,800 Fressnapf stores and their extensive marketplace ecosystem. Headquartered in Germany, Fressnapf operates in 14 countries and serves millions of pet owners every week.

By partnering with the retailer, Inventor Smart Care strengthens its presence in Europe’s rapidly growing market for preventative pet healthcare.

Following the success of the award, the company plans to expand further into Asian markets, strengthen partnerships with welfare organisations, and continue developing new innovations within pet health and wellbeing.

“We are not just putting another toothbrush on the shelf,” added Victor Carpio. “We are changing the way people think about oral care for cats by making it simple, stress-free and something that both cats and humans can enjoy.”

Rabbit Welfare Press Release

RWAF Urges Families to Say No to Rabbit Petting This Half Term

As families across the UK prepare for October half-term visits to farm parks, the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF) is urging parents to reconsider taking part in rabbit petting activities due to serious welfare concerns.

Ahead of the holidays, the RWAF contacted all 573 UK farm parks asking them to end rabbit petting sessions. These popular ‘pat-a-pet’ activities often involve visitors handling rabbits on tables or in crates. However, evidence shows that regular handling causes fear, stress, and long-term health effects in rabbits.

Only one farm park, Bucklebury Farm in Berkshire, agreed to make changes following the RWAF’s appeal.

New RWAF research revealed that 95% of people would not take part in petting sessions if they thought the animals were scared. More than half of respondents (53%) rated rabbit welfare at farm parks as poor or very poor, while 78% believed daily handling is harmful.

To most visitors, a rabbit sitting still might appear calm, but stillness is often a sign of fear. Studies show that handling triggers measurable stress responses in rabbits, including elevated heart rate, body temperature, and stress hormones. Prolonged handling can weaken immunity, disrupt digestion, and increase susceptibility to illness.

Rae Walters, CEO of the RWAF, said:
“Most of the farm parks I have spoken to deny that letting rabbits out to be handled, stroked, and picked up can be frightening for the animals involved, but we know that to be the case. Sadly, it is an activity that has long been embedded into farm park culture and draws a crowd. Who can blame children and adults for wanting to stroke rabbits? They are beautiful animals. But the truth is that this practice is terrifying for them. If more farm park visitors understood the negative effect on their wellbeing, we believe they would be happy to engage in alternative activities.”

Bucklebury Farm was the first to respond positively. Its Managing Director, Oliver Shute, explained:
“The changes we have made at Bucklebury Farm are all about giving our rabbits the life they truly deserve. They have space to run, dig, and hide, which helps them feel safe and content. For us, it is not just about visitors seeing animals, it is about showing what proper welfare looks like.”

The RWAF is calling on farm parks to sign up to its ‘Pat a Pet Pledge’, which encourages venues to replace rabbit petting with welfare-focused educational activities. Examples include preparing rabbit treats and enrichment games or learning through interactive quizzes, helping children understand animal behaviour and respect from an early age.

Media vet and RWAF patron Emma Milne added:
“The stress caused by these interactions cannot be overstated, and it can have devastating effects on the long-term health of these animals. I would urge farm parks to listen to the RWAF’s advice and educate visitors about the complex needs of rabbits.”

The RWAF continues to campaign for improved standards and education around rabbit welfare, calling for petting activities to be replaced by enrichment-led, welfare-first experiences.
